Very quick question – for a brand new SP VM, can I install SP1 then jump straight to this CU?

But if you don’t use any other languages besides the built-in one (e.g. Russian as you described in your example), do you still need to install the language pack? If so, why?

When I install a SharePoint CU (currently running SP2016), some servers don’t ask me to reboot while others do. Are we required to reboot them all regardless the message? Also when I install both language independent and dependent patches, can I install both and reboot only once, or do I have to reboot after each installation (so twice in total)?

Reboot is only required if files the installer tries to replace are in use.
Only those servers where the message shows up are required to be rebooted.
And a single reboot after installing all fixes would be sufficient.

Cheers,
Stefan

The built in language is a language for which fixes are required.
So both fixes are always required.

I have installed Feature pack 2 and the build number shows as “16.0.4507.1000”. This is different than the above mentioned. Am I missing something? please advise

Hi Abdul,

just install both binaries on the web and app server and run PSCONFIG on each of the servers.
Of course ensure to take backups on all servers (including the DB server) before applying any updates to allow simple rollback in case of a problem.

Cheers,
Stefan

Yes, I have run the PS Config wizard.

Just to clarify, I can see the updated version correct under “Manage Patch Status” i.e. 16.0.4588.1000. The version under “Servers in Farm” shows incorrect i.e. 16.0.4507

Hi Saran,
sounds to me as if only the language dependent fix and not the language independent one was installed.
Please double check that both fixes were installed.

Stefan

Sorry to ask…

Can Sharepoint 2013’s database reside on SQL 2014 but on a 2016 Server?

So web front end and applications would be 2012r2 but the database would run on 2014 SQL instance sat on a 2016 server.

Hi Ben,
the windows server version of SQL server is not relevant to SharePoint. As long as the Windows version is supported with the SQL version it is fine.
Cheers,
Stefan

Thank you for such a quick reply here. My gold partner re-seller is telling me otherwise! Much appreciated.

Would be interested to hear if any resolution to this was found as I installed this July CU on staging environment and ended up in the same state with search being Paused by external request without luck in kicking it back to running. Tried removing whole search service application but it go stuck on Unprovisioning status. Now working on restoring the environment from backups and will probably install some other CU just in case.

How do you know if a SharePoint patch modifies the Microsoft.SharePoint.dll prior to running psconfig?

The file is not modified by PSConfig but by the installer. So you can check on the file system.
